TRANSPORTATION

Roads:

The road network in Jamaica consists of almost 21,000 kilometres of roads, of which over 15,000 kilometres is paved. The numbering scheme used covers freeways, primary (or A) roads, secondary (or B) roads, parochial roads and unclassified roads.

Starting in the late 1990s the Jamaican Government (in cooperation with private investors) embarked on the Highway 2000 project to create a system of freeways, the first such access-controlled roads of their kind on the island. The project seeks ultimately to link Kingston with Montego Bay and the north coast. It is being under taken as a series of phases:
  • Phase 1a was the 33 kilometre Kingston-Bushy Park highway (in actuality, Kingston-Sandy Bay) which was completed in 2003, and the upgrade of the Portmore Causeway, completed June 2006.
  • Phase 1b Sandy Bay-Williamsfield (for Mandeville).
  • Phase 2a Old Harbour-Ocho Rios.
  • Phase 2b Mandeville-Montego Bay.
On 2009-09-15 Jamaica's prime minister, Bruce Golding, announced to Parliament that Highway 2000 is to be renamed in honour of Usain Bolt.

Railroads:

The Railways of Jamaica, constructed from 1845, were the first railway lines opened to traffic outside Europe and North America, and the second British Colony after Canada's Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad of 1836 to receive a railway system. Construction started only twenty years after George Stephenson's Stockton and Darlington Railway commenced operations in the United Kingdom.

The public passenger railway service in Jamaica is presently not running, having closed October 1992, with the Parliament of Jamaica debate leading towards a revival under a public joint venture corporation proposed with an offshore partner. Private freight transport continues on limited tracks leading to the various docks around the Caribbean island, transporting bauxite and sugar cane for export.
  • total: 370 km
  • standard gauge: 370 km 1,435 mm (4 ft 8.1?2 in) gauge. Of these, 207 km belong to the Jamaica Railway Corporation in common carrier service but are no longer operational. The other 163 km is privately owned and used to transport bauxite.

Aviation:

There are two international airports in Jamaica with modern terminals, long runways, and the navigational equipment required to accommodate the large jet aircraft used in modern air travel: Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and Sangster International Airport in the resort town of Montego Bay.

Both airports are home to the country's national airline, Air Jamaica. In addition there are local commuter airports at Tinson Pen (Kingston), Port Antonio, Ocho Rios, Mandeville, and Negril which cater to internal flights only. Many other small, rural centres are served by private fields on sugar estates or bauxite mines.
